What you didn’t know about our founder, Mani Kohli

The Khubsoorat story is not, and never will be solely about lehenga cholis and beautiful sarees. That’s because the story of Khubsoorat’s remarkably beautiful and finely-constructed fashions is in many ways also the story of our lead designer and founder, Mani Kohli, who in the more than three decades since her establishment of Khubsoorat Collection in 1985, has played a central role in shaping the current thriving Asian fashion scene.

Mani is today a renowned fashion stylist, recognised for the impeccable taste and innovation that she has brought to British Asian haute couture bridal and occasional wear. She is a truly self-made entrepreneur, with a strong sense for balance in nature and art. However, she is also disciplined, motivated and creative – all characteristics that he has called upon regularly en route to her present preeminent position among today’s leading British Asian fashion designers.

However, it has been a long journey to reach such a stage – and nor is Khubsoorat the only key component in Mani’s incredible story.

From humble origins to a premier position in British Asian fashion

Mani Kohli was educated at Loreto Convent in Shillong, India, and Carmel Convent in Goa. In the mid-1980s, she founded Khubsoorat Collection, selling unique and exquisite ethnic fusion wear to suit the cosmopolitan customer in the UK and the United States. Having previously had outlets in New York and New Jersey and a studio in New Delhi, Mani’s activities are now largely centred on her flagship London boutique, which continues to go from strength to strength.

It is this boutique to which Khubsoorat clients are invited when they wish to have the most gorgeous and glamorous bespoke pieces created in accordance with their most exacting needs. Our acclaimed custom design process culminates in a fitting session where clients can come to appreciate the fastidious work of Mani and her team to create the most suitable and jaw-dropping outfit each time.

To this day, Khubsoorat has made no fewer than 3,439 garments to order for 2,893 happy customers hailing from 143 countries around the world. Such statistics are an indication of the truly cosmopolitan appeal and sensibility of Khubsoorat’s creations. However, they are also testament to the unstinting discipline, determination and creativity of Mani herself, who closely oversees the production of every outfit.

The story’s not over yet!

With Mani having also recently founded the British Asian Fashion Network (BAFN) to bring more attention to the contributions of Asians to British fashion, she remains committed to breaking new boundaries – and who can blame her? After all, she hasn’t ceased in doing so since the very first Khubsoorat creations in the 1980s.

For everything from the most beautiful sarees to astonishing Asian wedding dresses, Mani Kohli remains a go-to source and authority. She is a hands-on designer who is as warm, effervescent and sincere as her designs continue to be innovative, pioneering and the perfect fit for even her most demanding clients, which have long included many a high-profile celebrity.

Who knows what may feature in the next chapter of the story of Mani Kohli and Khubsoorat?
